The other day I was cooking dinner and I asked the kids to go get me some basil from the back. They opened the door and then Sam decided he wanted to put his shoes on so Campbell waited at the door for him. Then Campbell starts waving and saying “hi!” I said, “who are you waving to?” and Campbell said, “the birdie!” So I go to look and this is what I saw sitting on the fence just 10 feet from our backdoor.
Eeek!!! After I closed the glass storm door, the kids and I stood there and watched the hawk until it flew away. It stayed for quite a bit and then came back a couple of times. It was really cool, if a little terrifying! The pictures really don’t do it justice. A cat-sized bird is just not something you are used to seeing in your yard!!
I can’t believe it just sat there letting you take pictures! You might want to encourage that bird to stick around — they eat you-know-whats…..
awesome!
Do you think he could have grabbed Campbell and flew away with her?
Haha, Dad! The thought did cross my mind, but no. I do think he could have gotten a newborn though!
Judi, that was the craziest part–not scared of us at all!! Our neighbor, Catherine, sent a picture to Northern VA Raptor Conservancy and apparently it is a JUVENILE Red Tailed Hawk. So it will get even bigger! I would love for him to make his home near us 🙂
