Sitting up is hard to do…

Since becoming a mom, I have developed an acute awareness of developmental milestones. Eye contact and smiles? One month. Rolling over? Four months. Sure, sure, all the books point out that these monthly estimates are averages and every baby develops differently. I realized somewhere along the way that I interpreted this to mean that my “above average baby” should hit each of these milestones days, if not weeks, early.

This has lead to many panicked conversations with Ben as the end of each month draws near and Sam has yet to hit the most recent milestone. “Ben! He won’t make eye contact! Do you think he hates me?” or “Ben! Do you think there is something wrong with his fine motor skills? He hasn’t grabbed anything yet!”

Yes, I am a little crazy. And yes, it is a good thing I married someone slightly less prone to overreacting. But I know I am not alone in worrying about my child’s development. I have heard other moms talking about how they can’t imagine that their child will ever learn to roll over, or sit up, or crawl. And then one day they do. Babies are neat like that.

My latest obsessive fear was that Sam wouldn’t be able to sit up by 6 months. I am embarrassed to admit that I even asked the doctor about it. (It was not the reason for the visit, but while I was there it couldn’t hurt to ask, right?) I am not sure why I was so worried. If just seemed like every time I put him in a sitting position, he threw his legs forward and fell backwards.

But then he started staying in the sitting position for a little bit longer…

and down!

But I was still crazy, and I still worried. Because that’s what I do, apparently. Then we went to see Sam’s doctor for his 6 month check up. Dr. M walked in while Sam was sitting on the exam table and remarked at what a good sitter he was for his age. I tried to pretend like I wasn’t the type of mother to get hung up on stuff like that.

Maybe someday I will be one of those cool, laid-back moms. Until then, I’ll just try to keep my neuroses to myself.

Sam’s First Easter

Sam had a great first Easter, full of spring activities.

His Auntie Becca came to visit for the weekend.

(Can you tell which side of the family Sam’s coloring comes from? Sorry, buddy.)

IMG_5721

We went to see the Easter Bunny and Sam didn’t even get scared.

IMG_5599

We walked around in the beautiful weather and enjoyed the cherry blossoms.

And on Monday, we went to the White House!

IMG_1370

Deirdre and Evelyn came too.

IMG_1368

And boy was it hot! Nothing like a little luke-warm milk to cool you down.

IMG_1373

Thanks for the invite, President Obama. Sorry we missed you! Maybe next time.

Happy half birthday, Sam!

It is hard to believe that Sam entered our life just 6 months ago. On the one hand, time has flown by and it seems like he was just born. But on the other hand, I can’t imagine our life pre-Sam and I feel like I’ve known him forever. Either way, I am completely in love and so happy to celebrate Sam’s half birthday!

Sam’s stats:

  • Weight: 17 lbs 7 oz (60th percentile)
  • Height: 27.5 inches (90th percentile–maybe he’ll play for the Spurs!)
  • Sleep habits: Goes to bed between 7:30 and 8 at night. Wakes up between 7 and 7:30 in the morning. He usually wakes up at about 6:30 and babbles for a few minutes and then falls back to sleep. I think we’re going to install a black-out shade in hopes that it will keep him quiet a little longer in the morning. He is no longer using the swaddle!
  • Sitting up. This is his newest skill. He still falls over pretty often but he is getting better and better each day.

IMG_5637

  • Loves to be tickled. He seems to be really ticklish. Whenever we tickle his belly he tenses up and lets out a deep laugh.

IMG_5686

  • Eager to please. Sam loves to get people’s attention by putting on a big, flirty smile. If the person whose attention he is vying for doesn’t immediately notice, he ups the ante and lets out a couple of squeals. Works every time.
  • Learning how to use a sippy cup. He can pick the cup up and bring it to his mouth but hasn’t figured out that he needs to tip it back to get any water out. It is so funny to watch him bringing the cup to his mouth which is open as wide as can be.
  • Swinger! The weather is nice now so we have been spending lots of time outdoors. We love going to the “tot lot” in our neighborhood and pushing Sam in the swing.

IMG_5613

  • Plays with his toys. He is getting better at grabbing and has really started to enjoy playing with his toys (basically just putting them in his mouth).

IMG_5443

  • Loves his doggie. Whenever Henry moves, Sam whips his head around to look at him.  It is so sweet to watch Sam try to reach out to touch Henry. Henry usually tolerates it for a minute and then wanders off.
  • Trying new foods. So far Sam has tried and enjoyed rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, sweet potatoes, avocados, and bananas. He makes a huge mess but I think most of it ends up in his mouth.
  • Mostly happy. We feel that we have been blessed with a very happy baby. Ben says that Sam has my cheerfulness and Ben’s calm nature. But in the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you, he’s not always happy…

Sam, we love you every minute of every day! Happy half birthday!

Love, Mom and Dad

Baby Buddies

Last week Sam and I went to visit our friends Katie and Madelyn. Katie was a teacher with me at Barcroft and Madelyn was born a few months before Sam. The four of us went on a walk along the Barcroft Trail, taking full advantage of the beautiful weather. After the walk, Sam and Madelyn played together for a little while.

Aren’t they adorable?

IMG_1350

They had a great time playing with Madelyn’s toys.

IMG_1341

IMG_1348

They even held hands!

IMG_1352

I’m sure they will be good friends.

Anniversary present

This year, Ben and I decided to forgo anniversary presents and make “dinner out” our present to each other.

IMG_5244

We decided we should save money.

IMG_5228

But then at dinner, Ben said he had a surprise.

IMG_5152

He got me a present!

IMG_5227

Can you guess what it is?

IMG_5170

Yup! A dSLR camera! Just like I always wanted!

IMG_1332

Clearly I have some work to do.

IMG_5323

But I am going to study up. Better pictures coming soon.

Four Years

Four years ago today I married my sweetheart.

50670031

He has been an amazing husband and this year I learned what an amazing father he is.

About to leave the hospital

Our tradition for the past three anniversaries has been to go to Puerto Vallarta for a week. Sadly, that was not in the cards this year. But thanks to our sweet friends Rachel and Heather, we did get to go to a Mexican restaurant! They were great babysitters and Ben and I were able to enjoy a relaxing, romantic evening.

Here’s to many more wonderful years to come. I love you, honey!

Playgroup

Sam had a great time at playgroup this week. See? You can tell in this picture.

sad sam

Actually, he really does love playgroup. But apparently does NOT like posing for pictures! I think he was mad at his friend Charlie for invading his personal space. He has gotten to be quite the particular little guy.

We go every Tuesday and normally have a great time. I will be sure to post pictures of happier playgroup moments in the future!

Yuuuummm!

We just started Sam on his first solid food this past Saturday. We decided to start with rice cereal since that seems to be a generally recommended first food.

He wasn’t sure about it at first…

IMG_1213

(Ben thinks he takes after me)

But we put on our happy faces and made our happy eating noises…

IMG_1216

And he started eating a little more of that rice cereal…

IMG_1221

His hands get in the way sometimes (they’re just so tasty!)…

IMG_1230

But it looks like he is really getting the hang of this whole eating thing…

Yuuumm!

Lunch Date

Today I needed to go grocery shopping and I didn’t really feel up to it. So to sweeten the deal, I decided to have a lunch date with Sam on the way to the store. And what better place to have a lunch date than Jason’s Deli.

IMG_1236

When I was pregnant, I was so excited to discover that this chain had opened up a location in Northern Virginia. In high school and college I went to Jason’s every now and then, but I didn’t really appreciate it until I moved here. While the DC area is full of delicious restaurants, there are almost no good, simple lunch places.

Not to mention, the drink choices.

IMG_1237

Dr Pepper…from a fountain!!

IMG_1238

Sweet tea!!

And of course Sam is just the best lunch date a girl could ask for.

IMG_1240

Although he had surprisingly little to add to the conversation…
